Some old band mates (Tom Mahoney on lead vocals and guitar, Ron Permoda on Stand-up Bass, Miles McHugh on guitar) were playing with their band Grand Canyon Rescue Episode at a brand new place in the city behind Sticky Lips BBQ. With Rochester being the home of Eastman Kodak Company (may you rest in peace) the club was aptly named Photo City Improv (I guess due to being a comedy club on most nights).
I was back in Rochester for the second funeral in three weeks (ugh), and stopped by the club only as a last-minute option before leaving town. I’m glad I did. Grand Canyon Rescue Episode laid it down in their unique Americana-bluegrass style and the new tunes impressed. Tom Mahoney in particular has a rare combination being a great songwriter/lyricist as well as a performer.
It was nice to see a decent turnout for the band and a great new room available to Rochester-area musicians, great to see GCRE still inspired and playing, and great to see familiar and smiling faces.
